CAN THE TITANS TRUST TANNEHILL FOR 4 YEARS??

The Tennessee Titans put their full trust into Ryan Tannehill to man their starting quarterback position for the next 4 years when they signed him to a $118 million contract yesterday afternoon.

The quarterback position is the most important of any NFL team and can be a defining factor of the ability if a team is able to compete or not. The Cleveland Browns are a perfect example since they’ve had 101- 234 record since 19999 with 29 different quarterbacks that have all been very inconsistent and haven’t found ways to help the team come away with wins. The Titans have had similar quarterback struggles because they’ve started 10 different quarterbacks over the last 10 years and have only been able to make it into the playoffs twice in that timespan.

The Titans haven’t had the best of luck with quarterbacks after their most recent draft bust in Marcus Mariota was benched for Ryan Tannehill after he started the 2019 season with a 2-4 record. Now Tennessee is putting all of their marbles in one basket and putting their trust into the former 7th overall pick from the Dolphins. They’re hoping he’ll be able to follow up his amazing play in the second half of the season when he compiled the highest passer rating over 10 games of 119.6, which is the eighth highest over the final 10 games of the season. Tannehill set the league on fire and was able to help his team dominate against teams like defending champion New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens who were led by the 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson.

Ryan Tannehill wasn’t the sole factor of the Titans beating these teams since he only compiled 369 yards during 3 games in the playoffs. The player that put the team on his back in my opinion was Derrick Henry, when he was able to average 196 yards during those games on the ground. Tannehill was able to make those critical passes when it was necessary to help keep the drive going, but with the limited pressure that was put on him during those games, it makes me nervous he can perform throughout the long run. Since he only passed around 80 yards against the Ravens and Patriots, this stat concerns me for when Derrick Henry gets shut down by the defense and Tannehill can’t rely on his running back to keep the drive going.

I believe this is a deal the Titans had to make since the Tannehill/ Henry duo was so successful last season, but I predict the Titans will regret this signing in the long run. They should’ve given him a two year deal in my opinion as a “prove it deal” since he was so inconsistent as the starter while in Miami. We’ll see how this deal pans out for both sides, but don’t be surprised if by the third year of this contract that Tannehill is sitting on the bench.
